MHYC Liferaft Exercise Day

Exercise Survival

As announced in the October 'Log', the members night normally set down for Tuesday, November 8th, has been postponed to allow the M.H.Y.C. Safety Committee to conduct a seminar preceding its sea going life raft exercise on Sunday 13th.

The seminar is obligatory to all raft and mother ship crews participating in the exercise; but is also open to all yachtsmen from either the inshore, offshore or cruising fleets. Six yacht clubs are participating in the exercise, which promises to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind ever conducted.

The panel of speakers conducting the seminar include senior officers of the Marine Control Centre, who will lecture on the problems, use and effectiveness of the (hopefully) soon to be introduced Emergency Radio Distress Beacons. (This talk is a must for anyone who cruises or races offshore).

The Water Police will explain their operations and procedures. The Chief Safety Officer of Qantas will talk and show films on the problem of locating small vessels or rafts from the air (this speaker has had considerable practical experience on both the giving and receiving ends!)

Dr Lindsay Roberts from M.H.Y.C. will talk on medical problems - seasickness, dehydration and the like; our friends from the Coastguard will explain their role in the coastal safety surveillance.

Mr Peter Dabbs of Seacraft will talk on his (for real) experiences; and the Beaufort and R.F.D. companies will demonstrate how to blow up and handle a raft to conclude the seminar.

All yachtsmen and yachtswomen are strongly urged to attend what promises to be a most interesting and instructive evening. The seminar starts at 7.30 p.m. sharp, in the main dining room. Come early - it is likely to be crowded.

Bruce Walpole - Chief Safety Officer
