Anthony Nossiter

MHYC Article 2004

Anthony and his dad Ben Nossiter are well known at MHYC. Sailing is in Nocka's blood and he began sailing at 7 years of age. His grandfather Harold Nossiter was the first Australian to sail around the world in a yacht he had built himself. His father Ben Nossiter, who Nocka rates as one of the most influential people in his career, is another famous sailor at MHYC.

When Anthony is not racing, his favourite hobbies are windsurfing, wave-surfing, kayaking and wake boarding. His sailing prowess is not only in Finns, but also in ocean racing when in 2004 he sailed on Djuice Dragon in the round the world Volvo Ocean Race. He is reported saying that his most humorous moment was being nude around Cape Horn during that race and said that "Australians must go 'bare-headed' while rounding the "Capes' of this planet" - he started the tradition.  (Yachting Australia 28/04/04).

The Finn class is one of the most physically demanding dinghies to sail and the only medal that Australia has won in this class was a bronze by John Bertrand in 1976. Nocka finished 13th overall in the Sydney 2000 Olympic games went into this Olympics rating 8th in the Finns for 2003. He was in the top ten positions throughout the entire competition in Athens and stunned the Finn world champion Ben Ainslie to win race 7. He finished a credible 6th place (a personal best).

Nocka is shortly leaving our shores along with no less than 5 other Olympic Finn sailors to join the Italian challenge of the 2007 America's Cup.

'Nocka' has been sailing the Finn since 1998 with various forays into the Volvo Ocean Race and the America's Cup, during which time he kept up with his Finn sailing. Although has had many top ten places over the years and world and Grade 1 regattas, never really made it as far as the podium. Big strong sailor who loves windy and wavy conditions, but capable of winning races in anything.
