Rajah
Joel ??" RAJA had the same name as Joel's Indian Restaurant at Crows Nest. She was around 38 to 42 feet and was around in the mid 70's.
On the Sydney to Brisbane Yacht Race in 1977, she blew up and sank.
David Johnson, the navigator is looking for more information on her. At the time he said: "He rang Middle Harbour Yacht Club-reverse charges, and they didn't accept his call! The skipper was burnt very badly and when David tried to move him to a safer location his skin came off into David's hands. However all 8 crew members survived.
Marine Rescue want him to do a talk."
CYCA Offshore Magazine 1977 Apr/May
The CYCA Offshore Magazine reports "Meanwhile, retirements were being announced on every sched (eleven in all). Two had valid reasons, Kintama, who lost a rudder, and The Rajah, which sank after an explosion. The Rajah, owned by Joel Mace, was the only petrol-engined yacht in the race. Because it was taking part in a proper&-organised event and carried all I.O.R. safety gear, the crew had a liferaft and rockets which they used intelligently and were picked up by a trawler and taken to Coffs Harbour in the minimum of time."
David said that is not quite correct.
