THE Sydney yacht Odyssey, skippered by John Gleeson, has taken first place on corrected time in the third and final race of the first Sunshine Coast ocean racing" championships in Queensland.
However, it was a. hollow victory for the yacht was elevated from second by the disqualification of another Sydney yacht Plum Crazy.
Plum Crazy, skippered by Tig Thornton (think Gilbert Thomas), was disqualified after a long deliberation by race judges for not rounding the first marker buoy.
Thornton claimed that neither he nor his crew had seen the buoy, but, the judges decided that as the other yachts had seen and rounded it, the protest should be upheld.
Line honors went to the Sydney yacht Helsal, which finished about seven kilometres ahead of her rivals.
Helsal made good use of sail capacity to pass the finish line early in the afternoon, while other yachts were hampered in the finishing run by calm conditions and slight winds.
With the disqualification of Plum Crazy, second place went to another Sydney yacht, Mateka Two, skippered by Tony Pearson and third to Queensland yacht Storm Bay skippered by Mike Tarquin.
